Training courses

We are proud to be able to offer a fast-track one day in-house training course in Spray Applied Plastering. This course, whilst intended to give the individual all the skills needed by them to operate as a Spray Plasterer, should be regarded only as the foundation of the knowledge & skills required in this profession.

Further knowledge & skill can only be acquired by continually practicing what has been taught within this course.  Additionally we try to visit our trainees on site within the UK (where possible) inside the first month following their attendance, to help them gain as much as they can from their newly acquired skills.  Telephone & email support can also be given within the working day to answer any immediate questions "on the fly".  A more advanced course  will be offered in the future once the trainee has had some site experience of their own, to give the trainee additional skills that cannot be covered in a one day course.

Below we outline the one day course, prices etc & details on how to book & find us.  Follow-up training & longer courses will be detailed once we have the time to upload the information, but are available upon request via email.  Please call us if you have further questions and to book a course.

In-house training for thin-coat sprayed plastering skills

Index to sections below

  • Introduction

Thin-coat spray plastering has been a commonplace method of plastering in Europe for over a quarter of a century, originating in Sweden as a post war method for fast-track plaster application; a necessity to keep up with the re-building programme across Europe following the Second World War.

Now adopted all around the world as the fast-track method of construction, it has started to become popular here in the UK too.

In addition to these benefits the advantage of having a skill which is easy to acquire and in a shorter amount of time than traditional plastering skills, has enabled a steady uptake in this new system of plastering within the UK.

With many British contractors now showing an interest in offering this service as part of thier portfolio, home-grown operatives are the answer, as opposed to foreign labour which has become increasingly unpopular & can at times be expensive.  This is where we come in.

Approved by Knauf Drywall, our training leads on to an informal rubber stamping exercise, that takes place externally to us on sites our past trainees have started work on.  Once each individual is officially "approved", they are able to get the full support offered by the manufacturers Technical Support teams in the UK (Knauf Drywall are now in the forefront in the UK & are our recommended materials system).

Knauf Drywall have stipulated that each trainee should go on to work upon two sites following out training, where their workmanship can be assessed to lead to Approval.  Should the trainee not have access to sites immediately following our training, then other arrangements can be made either by working as a subcontractor / on-the cards for a short while with us or with another spray plastering contractor; all these details can be discussed with us in due course.

We are also able to advise on the correct plant required for each type of spray plaster in use within the UK today, where you may purchase or hire it from and who sells the materials.  We can also supply sets of spatulas or put you in touch with our suppliers if you wish to buy several sets at once.

  • Objectives

Our in-house training facility has the capacity to comfortably train two trainees at once (although three can be accommodated at a push), giving them over the course of a day, the skills & knowledge necessary to become spray plasterers.  Whilst a single day is insufficient to give the broad knowledge & skills-base one would acquire during a career in this field of plastering, it does provide a practical person with the rudimentary abilities necessary to carry out spray plastering & to enable them to set themselves up in this trade as a subcontractor; spray plastering really is that easy!

On site follow-up support is provided, if required, within a month of attending our course.  Additionally we can answer questions as they arise over the phone or via email should the trainee need further help.  And if we can't Knauf Drywall's Technical Support team provide UK wide support once trainees have been approved by them.

The follow-up on-site support effectively provides a second day's training, enabling the trainees to get further tuition within a real-life environment, where the additional surface areas available can be used to start to hone the skills taught within our training facility.  The costs of this second day are given in our pricing section.

If the trainee isn't able to work on a site within a month of our in-house training course, other arrangements can be made, in order that Knauf Drywall approval is obtained expediently.  The trainee should contact us prior to attendance where they believe this may be the case.

A two day in-house course is available, tailored to an individual’s own requirements, should that be their preference or where their background isn’t of a practical nature.  Further tuition is planned for advanced students, but will not be available from launch.

We cannot guarantee that all attendees will be able to pick up all the skills we teach, but so long as the candidate is willing & has a practical disposition, it is unlikely they will be disappointed with what they have learnt at the end of the training course.

Timetable is subject to change; durations stated are approximate & for guidance only.  The trainees' progress dictates the time spent on the various content areas described above & subsequently not all content areas may be taught during the day.  Handouts will aim to cover aspects not taught.  A second day may be recommended necessary in such circumstances.

We cannot accept liability for not covering all the content areas described above.

Tea / coffee is provided, but lunch is not.  Food is available from visiting snack-van at 12.15pm or from local pub(s) .

Several handouts will be available throughout the day to reinforce the training given.  These are intended more as gentle reminders, rather than substitution of practical tuition.  Hands-on training is the only way this method of plastering can be taught.  Traditional plastering skills often surface during the course of the day, which tend to hinder rather than aid, the new techniques required for this method of plastering.

However as the trainee’s skills improve over time following this course, they should be able to complement their new skills with traditional plastering skills, since there are many which overlap.  The old adage “don’t run before you can walk” applies equally here, as it does with many skills.

The two day duration course will allow more time to be spent upon each area of skills taught, plus also allows for a greater depth of plant & material knowledge to be imparted.  However the two day course can only properly cater for tuition on a one-to-one basis, so although two trainees can be accommodated on the one day course, we prefer to cater for single trainees over this longer duration.  Our only limiting factor is the practice area (walls & ceilings) available.

  • Prices

(Please check with us prior to booking for current validity of Introductory prices)

The prices shown below are all VAT exclusive.  VAT at the standard rate of 17.5% applies to all our prices & will be added to the invoice, which will be required to be paid for in advance, via BACS or cash.  We can only accept cheques if sent ten days in advance, to allow for the bank clearing process.

On-site training (training at your premises or on site) is only available by negotiation; the prices shown below apply to in-house training only.  Negotiated rates for on-site training may include travel & accommodation expenses chargeable at our discretion.

Two day course for one person *

£360.00

* see notes at end of paragraph above "Prices" regards this course

Due to the size of our practice area / space available, there is a natural limit to how many people can be accommodated at any one time, both practically & safely.  This is our dictating factor for the limits placed on attendance numbers on each course.  However it may be possible for observers to watch the training in action, by agreement, should companies wish for their own training staff to be present to observe only.  Again please contact us with any questions or other requirements you may have.

The prices shown for two people assume the booking is made for two people to attend on the same day together & is paid for in one transaction (e.g. when a company sends two inviduals for training together).  However it does not apply to two individuals who have booked & paid independently of each other, but are trained together on the same day (e.g. two people from different companies who are trained together on the same day).  The reasons for such stem from administrative costs such as in dealing with the transactions etc.

These prices are current as of Tuesday, 12th January 2010 & are subject to change without notice. Prices charged for courses will be those current / made known at time of booking & may be different from those shown above.

UNIT LOCATION ON INDUSTRIAL ESTATE & AVAILABLE PARKING

Unit 1G, Bury Farm Industrial Estate - site location

Parking on the estate is limited.  Whilst there is parking available opposite our unit, it is on a "first come, first served" basis.  Please advise us prior to your arrival about your parking requirements, if any, so we can try to arrange some convenient parking elsewhere around the estate (or elsewhere) should parking opposite our unit be unavailable upon your arrival.  We cannot reserve parking spaces for you, but it is very unlikely that there will not be any parking space available somewhere upon the estate.  There are no charges for parking, nor is there any clamping (as far as we are aware) in operation, but we would ask that you park responsibly  Please do not park in Ken's Way, as access is required for heavy goods/ trucks at all times.

We provide notices, that can be displayed upon your dashboard, indicating your attendance at our premises, which we suggest you display during the duration of the course.

Please refer to the section on Travel Directions for further guidance on how to get here.

ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS

What to bring (clothing, pens/ paper, lunch etc)

You will not need any special clothing (PPE) etc, but it is advised that you either wear or bring with you old clothing or a boiler-suit, as the clothes you wear whilst doing the training will get grubby from plaster stains/ drops & dust (see General clothing care notes at end of this paragraph).  Safety footwear is not mandatory, but advisable for your own protection.

You shouldn't need to make any notes during the day, but if you want to please bring your own paper & pens.  We shall give out handouts both during & at the end of the day, to serve as reminders of pertinent points we have mentioned throughout the day.

We do not provide lunch, but a snack van visits the site daily around 12:15pm.  They sell sandwiches, rolls, cakes & light refreshments.  There are two pubs that serve lunches within 5 & 10 minutes drive respectively, but with a 45 minute lunch break it may not be possible to go there & back within this time.  We do provide tea & coffee for consumption at break times.

General clothing notes:  Whilst all the plaster is water based & washes out within the washing machine, it can transfer onto other clothes in the wash & give them a cloudy appearance (wash separately or rinse through prior to adding to main wash).

What we provide

No special PPE is required other than ear defenders, for which we provide ear-plugs free of charge.  We do provide gloves, which may be worn at your discretion, especially as they can help whilst you get used to the process.  We recommend their use especially since they have become a common requirement on virtually all of British building sites.  Sanding down the plaster does produce a dust which, whilst not harmful in itself, can be inhaled, ingested or lodge in the eyes, which may be unpleasant to some.  Simple face masks & goggles can be provided & will offer some protection against this dust; we do recommend their use.  Hard-hats are not required, though some form of hat will help keep the dust off your hair, since you will be doing a lot more rubbing-down in the early days after you start spray plastering, than when you have more experience.  We do not have any dedicated changing area, but the toilet area is big enough & can be used should this circumstance arise.

We provide tea & coffee for consumption at break times.  We do not provide any food.  Food & drinks can be consumed upon our premises, although alcohol is banned.  We have fresh running water & a WC within the workshop premises.  We have a landline upon which you can take in-coming calls, though we would prefer no out-going calls to be made unless in emergencies or for ordering a taxi.

We hope to be able to provide a certificate & a complimentary "another Spray Plasterer trained by RDA Building Solutions Ltd" Hi-vis waistcoat within a few weeks of launching the training courses - if you didn't get a Hi-vis when you trained with us, leave your details so we can mail it onto you.

Health & Safety Information

Please read through the notes above under "What we provide" as well as the following information.

Should you need to call us prior to your arrival, upon the day please call 01489 78 88 16 (or alternatively 07966 195 705 before 8.30am).  Please be aware mobile phone reception on the estate is very poor, so should you need to be contacted during the day, you may give out the landline number stated above for such purposes only.

Please read the notes on Parking stated above, since parking is very limited on the estate.

Smoking is not permitted within our premises, although it is outside (please dispose of cigarette ends responsibly - a sand bucket is provided).  Alcohol consumption is banned entirely upon the whole estate.  You may eat your lunch/ any snacks within our workshop should you wish or sit outside (during good weather), although there are no areas set aside for such purposes anywhere upon the estate.

Our premises' entrance door exits onto a busy estate access road - please ensure you look left & RIGHT when leaving the premises.

Within our premises we use & store machinery which runs on 110v & 240v single phase power, 400v three phase power and diesel.  We will make you aware of their existance, some of which you will be using during the duration of the course, since they present certain dangers (when not correctly managed) within both our premises & when used on building sites.  All such information will be dealt with within the induction we hold at the start of each training course.  At certain times we will have yellow 110v cabling laid out across the floor of the workshop & your attention will be drawn to such at the relevant time.

The thin-coat plasters we use are manufactured either by Knauf Drywall or Alltek.  Both companies' materials are inert & safe to handle in their wet state (they come ready-mixed in 25kg plastic bags ready for emptying into the spray hopper).  Once dry they present no problems either to the end user of the building or to the installer.  However sanding down these surfaces does produce a dust which, whilst not harmful in itself, can be inhaled, ingested or lodge in the eyes, which may be unpleasant to some.  A simple face mask & goggles will provide some protection against dust.

Prior to the start of the day's training trainees will be asked to complete a short registration form including personal details such as name, address, contact numbers, your next of kin (in case of an emergency) and your year of birth.  These personal details will be retained for our records, but should you wish them not to be retained, please tick the appropiate box on the form & they will be deleted once the course has been completed (although such action means they will not be able to recieve further information from us).  Additional information such as plastering & building trade experience, reason(s) for attending the course and experience of any similar machine applied plastering/ rendering will also be retained for our records & may be used to illustrate our target audience etc for future marketing purposes.  At the end of the day we will ask for your views upon the day's training to be written down, so we can use them to improve the content & structure of our training course.

We do not actively discriminate against any persons who wish to be trained in thin-coat Spray Plastering, however, given the nature of building sites within the UK, we would strongly advise wheel-chair users not to consider such a training course based upon the skills required & the environment within which they would be used.  Similarly there may be other impaired people, who will also find this type of work difficult or impossible to do, so we would seek to advise them should they consider taking up this line of work.

We are a private limited company, not affiliated with any other organisation or training body.  We are, however, approved contractors for Knauf Dywall & Alltek for the application of Sprayed Plastering using the thin-coat systems manufactured by these companies.  As such we try to run our businesses as good practices dictate & our training course has been set up based upon our experience within this field.

Knauf Drywall have agreed that any trainee that we teach will be allowed to be vetted by them/ their representatives, with a view to becoming Approved Contractors/ applicators of the Knauf Drywall system of thin-coat plastering.  We do not guarantee, however, that it is a foregone conclusion that any trainee will be accepted, but it is very unlikely that approval won't be granted.  If we feel that a trainee is not ready to become approved, we will make that trainee aware of it, but will not necessarily pass this information onto Knauf Drywall; this is done however at our discretion.

Please be aware that when arriving on-foot that we are located within a rural area some distance from shops & urban amenities, plus there are no footpaths or pavements for about two miles north towards Botley, or for a quarter of a mile towards Swanwick.  Extra care is therefore required when walking on such roads & it is of paramount importance that you obey the Highway Code & walk in the direction facing oncoming traffic in single file.  Whilst this may appear daunting at first, local drivers are well used to walkers on roads in this area & should give due consideration.

If you intend to walk for any part of your travelling to us during the winter months, it is imperative that you wear a Hi-vis jacket & have a torch on you.  Should you have any reservations about leaving the course in the dark, we will endeavour to do our best to take you to Botley or Swanwick stations, from where you can get a train.  Since the course starts at 9am this situation does not arise in the mornings.

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for the drawings – I shall give them a good looking over at the weekend.

With regards your request for our pricing I am very willing to let you have an in-depth knowledge of our price build-ups, so you can see where the costs are & how we may compare to traditional skimming. I find this “open-book” approach works well, so long as the client’s Quantity Surveyor doesn’t use it to get us to the work at cost less 5%, as then it all unravels if you see what I mean!

Generally we can get a better finish than traditional skimming on plasterboard & other surfaces using our thin-coat sprayed plastering system, but where we have to put more thickness on as is the case on traditional masonry (not as in thin-joint blockwork), we become un-competitive, as we need more coats to achieve a flat surface.

Thin-coat systems can now go on as thick as 4mm in one coat, so even with 2 coats getting to 8mm build thickness, we struggle to accommodate masonry tolerances which commonly exceed (on UK sites) this & can go up to half an inch as the norm. This is where we then have to resort to traditional plastering or a sand-cement render as a base course, taking out in-tolerances & providing a better surface to spray onto; this is costly as you’ll appreciate.

Thus I’m sure you can see, up till recently, we struggled to remain competitive on housing projects, where Quantity Surveyor’ screw plasterers etc down to the bone anyway. But on Self-Builds, where clients are more interested in build-quality, we score well. Thin-coat plasters also work well on large volume jobs, where, especially when not plastering over traditional masonry, the speed of application means quicker turn-around times & faster access for follow-on trades. Also drying times, flexible materials & less emulsion required help our thin-coat plasters achieve better overall production savings compared to traditional plastering.
